First, the relay has power and needs a ground to switch. It gets this ground from the spark unit when the engine is running. Evey revolution of the motor the coil is grounded by the spark unit. This is a momentary pulse of ground that is equal to the dwell time on a points vehicle.

Adding an additional ground (s) may not be a bad idea! Right now the only way the frame is grounded is by way of the Motor mounts, then the starter. Running at least one more ground wire to the ground under the seat wouldn't be a bad idea. Its a waterfall of unfortunate issues if your not properly grounded.
